I read THE TIME TRADERS and GALACTIC DERELICT over 50 years ago when I was about twelve. I remembered liking them a whole lot. I just finished reading all four of the series. I did not know about THE DEFIANT AGENTS and THE KEY OUT OF TIME. Rereading stories from the age of twelve doesn’t always work well, but I settled back into my twelve-year-old mentality quite nicely with these. These can be described as “mindless, adolescent fiction,” but only in the sense that is true of essentially all fiction written purely for entertainment. They are not childish, and at the age of twelve they gave me a sense of the vastness of time and space, and of the beings that might be considered fellow humans. In those days, science fiction was rare. In some ways that rareness was preferable. It meant that only those few writers dedicated to science fiction wrote it. It is too bad the few younger readers are likely to read this book. They're missing something.

Galactic Derelict Andre Norton 9780441272266 Books Reviews

Secret of the Lost Race (1959) is a standalone SF novel in the Stars-and-Comets universe. It is set in the mid future within N'Yok on Terra and on Fenris. Mankind has spread though the stars and found three other races who have space travel. Yet ancient ruins are found on many planets, some primitive and others made by technologically advanced beings.

In this novel, Joktar is a seemingly young man, but he is older than he looks. He and his mother had come to N'Yok from elsewhere. His mother had become ill from some disease and died. Joktar was raised by Kern and his employees. Now he deals Stars-and-Comets.

Kern is a vip of Jet'Town, the enclave of joy houses bordering the spaceport. He has watched Joktar gradually grow older and become more skilled. Now Joktar is one of Kern's best dealers of Stars-and-Comets.

Hogan is a former trader on Fenris. Now he leads an outlaw gang fighting against the mining companies.

Rysdyke is a former spacer. Now he is a member of Hogan's gang.

In this story, Joktar is setting up his game when another dealer mentions a possible raid by the Emigration men. Colonists are volunteers, but emigrants are press-ganged. The E-men gather drifters off the streets to send out to the colonies in cold sleep. The Jet'Town houses are used to such raids.

Joktar closes down his game and goes up to Kern's office. He informs the boss about what he was told. Kern seems unaware of the news. He has Joktar sound the inhouse alarm.

Joktar is returning to his table when the vibrators go off. He immediately reverses his direction and goes back up to the office. The guard waves him off and they both go up to the space directly under the roof.

Joktar rolls out two fog bombs and launches himself toward his getaway panel. He finds E-men on the other side. A stun beam knocks him unconscious.

When Joktar wakes, he is lying within the E-pens. Others are already awake and question him. Joktar only says the obvious things. Internally, he is wondering if Kern is getting rid of him.

Joktar is taken away from the others to a room. Several men are arguing about him. Some want to give him to a Scout, who is convinced that Joktar had attacked his friend. Others just want to ship him away to a colony. They argue, but finally agree to ship him to Fenris.

Joktar is hastily prepped for cold sleep and placed in a coffin-like container. It is the last container loaded on a truck for a trip to the spaceport. The container is loaded into an E-ship just before it takes off.

On Fenris, Joktar is the first emigrant to wake from the cold sleep. He is also in the first group of emigrants taken to the auction. Although a trapper bids against the company, Joktar is sold to the Jard-Nellis Corporation.

Afterward, the emigrants are loaded on a crawler and taken toward the mines. They spend the night at a way station. The next morning, a guard picks Joktar as a load-hop on a jumper. First, Joktar loads boxes and bags into the jumper; then he unloads all the red marked items at the first stop.

On the way to the next stop, an avalanche scrapes the jumper off the road. The driver and guard are killed. Joktar salvages everything useful and light enough to carry. Then he walks off to find his way out of the wilderness.

This tale bring Joktar to Hogan's gang. At first, they believe him to be a company spy. After an interrogation by Rysdyke under drugs, Joktar is allowed to join the gang.

This story is not one of the best by this author. It is only a novella and was first published as half of an Ace doublebook. The short length tightens the plot and rushes the story. Yet it has many of the strengths one expects in the author.

Joktar discovers some surprising information about himself. This story is a standalone work. No other volumes are set on Fenris and Joktar is not featured in any other book. Yet it is much like The X Factor and other tales by the author.

Recommended for Norton fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of stranded orphans, political intrigue, and unusual friends. Read and enjoy!

Classic 1950's Sci-Fi - and STILL an engaging tale... This one has it ALL - time travel, space voyaging, both prehistoric and alien creatures - all neatly and plausibly contained in one story!

Alice Mary Norton - writing as "Andre Norton" and "Andrew North" - was ahead of her time, a rare female Science Fiction author (in a time when it wasn't quite considered "proper" for a lady...)

A treasure yet today...
What would happen if you accidentally started up a spaceship and had no idea how to run it, figure out where it is going or why, or how to get back to Earth? You'd die, over and over again, unless every catastrophe was accompanied by miraculous luck. That's basically all you need to know about this novel. Entertaining at times, unbelievable at others, and just one in a series of novels which peters out well before the series ends. HOWEVER If you liked The Time Traders you'll definitely want to read this one and perhaps its sequel, so despite what may sound like a lukewarm review, I felt I should give it 3 stars.
Before it was politically correct Andre Norton was populating her books with minority characters and making them people with the same strengths, fears and needs as the majority. Perhaps this is why I have been drawn to her books for over 40 years. Believable characters. This is one of her shorter books and is a nice lead into the next book Defiant Agents. It is a quick read but very satisfying.
